Every generation has asked one spiritual question more than any other: “Can unbelievers have spiritual gifts?” People want to understand why some seem to walk in supernatural abilities while others remain spiritually blind, powerless, and confused. And many unbelievers themselves feel this hunger for something deeper, something supernatural—but they don’t know where to start.
So today, I want to speak directly and honestly—especially to those who are still outside the faith. Because if you are asking this question, it means your heart is already searching. It means something in you is tired of living by human strength alone. It means you are sensing that God is calling you into a higher life, a spiritual life, a life powered by the Holy Spirit.
Can Unbelievers Have Spiritual Gifts?
The answer is simple: No, unbelievers cannot have spiritual gifts because spiritual gifts come only from the Holy Spirit—and unbelievers have not received the Holy Spirit.
But this is not the end of the story. In fact, this message will show you how the Holy Spirit can transform your life the moment you surrender to Christ. And I will use the story of a man who once hated the church—Paul—but after receiving the Spirit, God used him more mightily than the apostles who walked physically with Jesus.
Why Can’t Unbelievers Have Spiritual Gifts?
Spiritual gifts are not natural talents. They are not personality traits. They are not things you inherit from your parents. They are not abilities you pick up from a mentor. They are supernatural empowerments given only by the Holy Spirit.
This is why the Scripture says:
“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.” — 1 Corinthians 12:4
If the gifts come from the Spirit, then it means the gifts cannot operate in someone who does not have the Spirit. And the Bible is very clear that only those who belong to Christ receive the Spirit.
“If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His.” — Romans 8:9
This means the Spirit is not an “optional extra.” He is the identity of everyone who belongs to Jesus. Without Him, there is no salvation, no power, no spiritual vision, and no spiritual gifts.
Unbelievers Are Spiritually Dead Without the Holy Spirit
Before you receive the Holy Spirit, you are spiritually dead. Not physically dead—but dead to the things of God. Dead to His voice. Dead to His direction. Dead to His power. Dead to His purpose. And dead men cannot operate spiritual gifts.
This is why Jesus told Nicodemus:
“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” — John 3:3
You cannot see it.
You cannot understand it.
You cannot operate in it.
You cannot function spiritually in any capacity.
And this is why the gifts cannot flow through unbelievers—they do not have the life of the Spirit in them.
The Holy Spirit Is Given Only After Surrender
The pathway to receiving the Spirit is not complicated. It is clearly stated in the Bible:
“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” — Acts 2:38
Unbelievers have not repented. They have not surrendered. They have not died to their old life. They have not received Jesus. And because of this, the Spirit has not entered them—and without the Spirit, the gifts cannot manifest.
This is not condemnation. It is an invitation. Because the same Peter who said this was once a man of weaknesses, fear, and instability until the Spirit filled him and transformed him.
The Holy Spirit does not discriminate. He fills anyone who truly surrenders.
Paul: A Man Who Proves What the Holy Spirit Can Do With an Unbeliever
If you want to see what God can do with someone who once opposed Him, look at Paul. He was not only an unbeliever—he was a persecutor. He supervised the killing of Christians. He dragged believers out of their homes. He breathed hatred against the church.
“Saul was breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord.” — Acts 9:1
This was not a normal unbeliever. This was an enemy of the gospel. But one encounter with Jesus changed everything. Saul fell to the ground, blinded by the glory of Christ, and for the first time in his life, he asked the right question:
“Lord, what will You have me to do?” — Acts 9:6
That is surrender. That is repentance. That is obedience. And from that moment, Jesus sent Ananias to him, and he received the Holy Spirit.
“Brother Saul, the Lord has sent me… that you might receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” — Acts 9:17
The same man who persecuted the church became the vessel God used to write most of the New Testament. God used Paul more than the apostles who physically walked with Jesus. Not because Paul was better—but because he fully surrendered and allowed the Spirit to take over.
Unbelievers do not have spiritual gifts—but when they receive the Spirit, God can use them in ways beyond imagination.
What the Holy Spirit Will Do in the Life of Anyone Who Surrenders
If you are reading this as an unbeliever, here is the truth: the Holy Spirit is the greatest gift God can ever give you. He is the life of God entering your life. And He will transform you in ways you never thought possible.
1. The Spirit Will Break Your Old Chains
Your addictions, your habits, your sinful desires, your anger, your pride, your darkness—He will break them all. The Spirit doesn’t repair the old man; He kills him and raises a new one.
2. The Spirit Will Give You Divine Purpose
Until the Spirit enters you, you do not know why you were created. Your life is random. Your decisions are scattered. But the moment the Spirit enters, purpose becomes clear.
3. The Spirit Will Empower You With Gifts
He will give you abilities beyond human strength—wisdom, prophecy, faith, discernment, healing, tongues, and more. These gifts are not toys; they are heavenly tools to fulfill your kingdom assignment.
4. The Spirit Will Transform Your Character
Your attitudes, your speech, your behavior, your mindset—all become new. This is why Scripture says:
“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
5. The Spirit Will Guide Your Life
No more confusion. No more guessing. No more wandering. The Spirit becomes your compass, your teacher, your comforter, your voice, your direction.
