If there is one question that sits at the center of every genuine Christian journey, it is this: “How can I receive the gift of the Spirit?” Because until a man receives the Spirit, he will always try to act holy without power, pray without authority, and live without true spiritual direction. And this is why many Christians today are full of church activity but empty of the Spirit’s reality.
And so today, I want to speak directly to your heart—whether you are a believer trying to understand why your walk with God feels dry, or an unbeliever who has been pretending to be “close to God” while rejecting His voice in secret. The Spirit of God is not given to those who appear religious, but to those who obey what Jesus commanded.
How can I receive the gift of the Spirit?
According to Acts 2:38, you receive the gift of the Spirit by repenting of your sins, being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and then God gives you the Holy Spirit—who gives all spiritual gifts.
What does it really mean to receive the gift of the Spirit?
Receiving the gift of the Spirit is not simply “believing in God.” It is a supernatural transaction between your surrendered heart and the blood of Jesus Christ. It is the moment God Himself comes to live in you, empower you, transform you, and use you as a vessel for His purpose on earth. This is why the apostles emphasized repentance as the doorway. Because the Spirit will never dwell in a life that refuses to obey the voice of the Lord.
Let’s walk this message slowly, deeply, and truthfully—because this is not a motivational sermon. This is a call to repentance, a warning to hypocrites, and a roadmap for sincere seekers who truly desire the life of the Spirit.
Repentance: The First Door to the Spirit
When Peter preached in Acts 2, thousands of people were cut to the heart and cried out, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” They were not asking how to become church members. They were not asking how to join a prayer group. They were not asking how to receive spiritual gifts. They were asking how to be saved. And Peter, under the full influence of the Holy Spirit, gave the only divine answer:
“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” — Acts 2:38
This means repentance is not an option. It is the foundation. It is the gate. It is the first qualification. Without repentance, even if you fall under “anointing”, speak long tongues, or attend a prophetic church, you are only experiencing religious excitement—not transformation.
And repentance is not:
- Attending church every Sunday
- Giving offering and calling it “seed”
- Praying loud but living in secret sin
- Singing worship songs while the heart remains unsubmitted
Repentance is turning from sin with the intention to never go back again. It is a heart-level decision to obey Jesus at all cost. It is admitting that your old life cannot walk with God’s Spirit.
Why Hypocritical Christians Never Receive the Spirit
Let me speak plainly: many Christians do not have the Holy Spirit—not because God is unwilling, but because they refuse to repent. They pretend in church, pretend online, pretend around pastors, but God sees the heart. The Spirit does not fall on those who pretend to love righteousness but secretly love sin.
Jesus Himself said, “These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” That is the definition of hypocrisy. And hypocrites cannot receive the Spirit.
You can deceive your pastor.
You can deceive your friends.
You can deceive your church.
You can deceive your parents.
But you cannot deceive the Spirit of God.
The Spirit searches the heart. He sees whether you truly want Him or you just want to feel spiritual. He knows if you’re asking for His gifts while planning to continue in sin tomorrow. He knows if you want power without holiness.
And hear this truth clearly: The Holy Spirit is not given to those who “perform Christianity,” but to those who obey Christ.
Repentance Is Obeying Jesus, Not Joining a Church
Many people think repentance means joining a church. So they join choir. They join prayer band. They join ushering. They join evangelism department. They join fellowship. But their heart has not turned to Jesus.
Repentance is not an activity. It is obedience. It is responding to the voice of Jesus. It is dropping your old life at the feet of the cross. It is surrendering your desires, your habits, your addictions, your rebellion, your secret sins—completely.
This was why Jesus told Nicodemus, a religious leader and teacher of Israel, “You must be born again.” Not “You must be religious.” Nicodemus had religion already, but he didn’t have the Spirit.
The modern Nicodemus is the Christian who attends church faithfully but has no transformation. He sings but is not sanctified. He prays but does not obey. He talks about God but has no life of the Spirit.
Until repentance becomes genuine, the Spirit will remain distant.
Why Baptism in the Name of Jesus Matters
Peter did not say “repent only.” He said:
“Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.”
Baptism is not just a ceremony. It is the burial of your old nature. It is the public declaration that your life now belongs to Christ. When you go down into the water, it symbolizes death. When you rise, it symbolizes resurrection.
This is why the Spirit comes after repentance and baptism—because your old life has been buried and the Spirit is coming to live in the resurrected life of Christ inside you.
If you are avoiding baptism, delaying it, or treating it lightly, it simply means you have not fully surrendered. And the Spirit cannot dwell in a life that refuses burial.
The Holy Spirit Comes to Those Who Obey
The apostles made this clear when they said:
“The Holy Spirit is given to those who obey Him.”
This is why unbelievers cannot receive the Spirit—they do not obey Christ. And hypocrites cannot receive the Spirit—they pretend obedience but do not live it. But the sincere man or woman whose heart is ready to obey Jesus at all cost—God fills such a person immediately.
The Spirit is not far from you. He is only waiting for your obedience.
