One of the most common questions believers ask — especially new believers — is whether the Holy Spirit is a person or just a spiritual force. Many speak of Him as power, influence, or atmosphere, but scripture gives us a clearer picture.
This question is important because how I understand the Holy Spirit determines how I relate with Him.
You cannot relate with a person the same way you relate with a thing.
Is The Holy Spirit A Person Or Thing
The Holy Spirit is not a thing, a force, or an influence. He is a person. Scripture consistently refers to Him as “He,” and reveals that God Himself is Spirit.
This understanding is foundational to walking with God.
Why This Question Matters
If I see the Holy Spirit as a thing, I will try to use Him.
If I know Him as a person, I will learn to relate with Him.
Scripture never presents the Holy Spirit as an object.
He speaks.
He feels.
He wills.
These are personal attributes.
Scripture Refers To The Holy Spirit As He
One of the clearest proofs that the Holy Spirit is a person is the consistent use of personal pronouns.
Jesus said:
“When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth.” (John 16:13)
Jesus did not say “it.”
He said “He.”
This was intentional.
He Teaches
Jesus said:
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit… He will teach you all things.” (John 14:26)
Teaching requires intelligence.
It requires understanding.
A thing cannot teach.
He Speaks
Scripture says:
“Now the Spirit expressly says…” (1 Timothy 4:1)
Speaking is personal.
The Holy Spirit communicates.
He Can Be Grieved
Paul wrote:
“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.” (Ephesians 4:30)
Only a person can be grieved.
A force does not feel sorrow.
This confirms personhood.
The Holy Spirit Has A Will
Scripture says:
“One and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” (1 Corinthians 12:11)
The Holy Spirit makes decisions.
Decision-making is personal.
The Holy Spirit Can Be Resisted And Lied To
Stephen said:
“You always resist the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 7:51)
You cannot resist a thing.
You resist a person.
Peter told Ananias:
“Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit?” (Acts 5:3)
You cannot lie to electricity.
You lie to a person.
The Holy Spirit Intercedes
Scripture says:
“The Spirit Himself makes intercession for us.” (Romans 8:26)
Intercession is intentional.
It requires understanding.
This further confirms personhood.
God Is Spirit
To fully understand the Holy Spirit, I must understand God’s nature.
Jesus said:
“God is Spirit.” (John 4:24)
This means God’s essence is spiritual.
The Holy Spirit is not separate from God.
He is God.
Not a different God.
But God expressed personally.
The Holy Spirit Is Not An Energy
Energy is impersonal.
The Holy Spirit is relational.
He comforts.
He guides.
He corrects.
These are relational functions.
Jesus Related To The Holy Spirit As A Person
Jesus said:
“I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper.” (John 14:16)
The word “another” means one like Me.
Jesus is a person.
The Helper is also a person.

When I understand that the Holy Spirit is a person:
I learn to listen.
I learn to obey.
I learn to yield.
I learn to walk with Him.
