What Psychologists Think About Speaking in Tongues

Speaking in tongues is one of the most extraordinary manifestations of the Holy Spirit, yet it is also one of the most misunderstood.

In recent times, psychologists and secular researchers have attempted to explain or define tongues through human reasoning, often describing it as “abnormal behaviour” or a “pathological phenomenon.”

But as students of the Spirit, we must examine such claims through the lens of Scripture—not through the limited understanding of the natural mind.

What do psychologists think about speaking in tongues?

Psychologists generally consider speaking in tongues to be an abnormal behaviour that falls under what they call a “pathological phenomenon.”

But this conclusion is the result of a carnal mind trying to judge a spiritual reality it cannot understand.

The Bible already reveals that the natural man cannot receive the things of the Spirit, so their conclusions are expected and carry no spiritual authority.

The Carnal Mind Cannot Understand the Spiritual Realm

One of the greatest mistakes psychology makes is assuming that everything about human experience can be explained through the natural mind. But the Bible gives a clear boundary that separates the natural from the spiritual.

1 Corinthians 2:14 says:

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

This is exactly why psychologists label tongues as abnormal:
They are operating from a natural mind, and therefore they lack the capacity to discern what comes from the Holy Spirit.

To them, tongues sounds strange, unscientific, irrational, and uncontrollable. But to believers, it is a beautiful Holy Ghost language that flows from the inner man as the Spirit gives utterance.

Paul already warned us: anything that does not originate from the Spirit will never understand the things of the Spirit. Therefore, psychology’s conclusion is not a revelation—it is merely proof of the limitations of human intellect.

If they could understand tongues, then the Scripture would be broken. Their confusion is confirmation that tongues is spiritual.

Psychologists Examine Tongues From the Wrong Foundation

The problem is not science; the problem is the foundation from which science tries to study spiritual things. Psychology builds its conclusions from:

Observable behaviour
Human reasoning
Cognitive patterns
Neurological responses

But the Spirit of God cannot be examined through microscopes, behavioural charts, or brain scans. The Bible reveals that the authors wrote as they were moved by the Holy Ghost (2 Peter 1:21). This means the Scriptures themselves were breathed into existence by the Spirit. Therefore, no human analysis can override what the Spirit has authored.

Psychologists observe the outward manifestation—tongues—but they cannot access the inward spiritual operation powering it. They hear sounds but cannot discern utterance. They see expression but cannot perceive inspiration. They observe behaviour but cannot interpret the divine communication taking place between God and the believer.

To them, the spiritual dimension is invisible and therefore irrelevant. But to us, it is the very foundation of our faith.

A Spiritual Gift Cannot Be Judged By a Natural Discipline

Speaking in tongues is a gift of the Spirit, not a product of learned behaviour or emotional outburst. Paul lists tongues in 1 Corinthians 12:4–11 as one of the nine gifts distributed by the Holy Spirit. A gift from God cannot be properly evaluated by a discipline that denies the Holy Spirit.

Psychology is useful in many areas of mental health—but spiritual gifts are outside its jurisdiction. The moment psychologists try to explain tongues, they operate beyond the borders of their knowledge. They are attempting to judge a language inspired by God through a framework created by man.

Why Psychology Mislabels Tongues as “Pathological Behaviour”

Psychologists use the word “pathological” to describe actions they believe deviate from normal mental functioning. To them, tongues fall under this category because:

It does not follow natural language patterns
It cannot be explained through human logic
It bypasses the control of the conscious mind
It is triggered by spiritual stimulation, which they do not acknowledge

But these reasons are exactly why tongues prove themselves spiritual. If tongues were man-made, psychologists could interpret it. But because tongues originates from the Holy Ghost, the natural mind rejects it.

Paul already told us:

“For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.”
(1 Corinthians 14:14)

Psychologists study the understanding,
but the Scripture clearly says understanding is not involved.

So what they call “pathological,”
the Bible calls “spiritual.”

The Beauty of Tongues That Psychology Cannot See

The beauty of tongues cannot be understood scientifically because it is not a mental action—it is a spiritual expression. Tongues is:

A language of mysteries spoken unto God (1 Corinthians 14:2)
A means of edifying the inner man (1 Corinthians 14:4)
A sign to unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:22)
An overflow of the Spirit’s presence within the believer

Psychology can analyze emotion but cannot measure edification.
It can diagnose disorder but cannot perceive divine communication.
It can study behaviour but cannot interpret mysteries spoken to God.

Their blindness is not academic—it is spiritual.

Why Psychology Will Always Clash With the Spirit

Psychology relies on natural perception; the Spirit operates from divine revelation. Therefore, the two cannot agree. Paul explains this in the clearest terms:

Romans 8:7 —
“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God…”

The carnal mind is not merely unaware—it is opposed. It resists what it cannot comprehend. This is why psychologists see the things of God as strange, irrational, or abnormal.

But Christianity was never designed to be understood carnally. Everything about the kingdom is spiritual.

Jesus said in John 4:24:

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

Psychology wants worship to be intellectual.
God demands it to be spiritual.

Using Scripture to Debunk Psychological Misinterpretations

The Scriptures give us ultimate authority—not psychology, not human reasoning, and not scientific interpretation. When psychologists call tongues abnormal, we must respond by checking what the Word says:

Acts 2 shows the Holy Spirit giving utterance.
Acts 10 shows Gentiles speaking in tongues as evidence of receiving the Spirit.
Acts 19 shows new believers speaking in tongues the moment hands were laid on them.
1 Corinthians 14 explains the purpose and structure of tongues in the church.
1 Corinthians 12 classifies it as a gift of the Spirit.

All these reveal ONE truth:
Tongues is not psychological; it is spiritual.

And when psychology contradicts Scripture, it is psychology that must bow.

Psychology Proves It Is Unqualified to Interpret Tongues

Psychology cannot understand tongues because:

It denies the source (the Holy Spirit)
It analyzes behaviour without acknowledging spiritual influence
It interprets from the earth while tongues originate from heaven

Attempting to judge tongues without the Spirit is like trying to analyze fragrance without smell. The instrument of perception is missing. And because the natural man lacks spiritual senses, he will always misinterpret spiritual manifestations.

Never allow the limited understanding of the natural mind to make you doubt the supernatural gift that God has placed within you. Psychology calls it abnormal, but Scripture calls it divine. Psychology labels it pathological, but the Spirit calls it edifying. Psychology sees foolishness, but God sees worship.

As long as the Holy Spirit remains the giver of this gift, no human discipline will ever be qualified to judge it.
