Reading this passage in its context starting from verse 19, we discover that the woman Jesus spoke to had suffered from a severe issue of blood for over 12 years. Having heard about the miracles Jesus performed and discovering He was within reach, she thought within herself that if only she could touch the hem of His garment, she would be healed. Once she took that bold step, she immediately received her healing. As Hebrews 11:6 reveals, anyone who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. This is precisely what happened with this woman: when she came to Jesus, she was already certain in her heart that touching the hem of His clothes would make her whole, and Jesus commended her faith. Her case is symbolic of the kind of faith many believers channel through holy or symbolic objects for the reception of their miracles. Many Christians believe that kneeling before a crucifix or holding a sacred symbol helps focus their faith to receive answers. Unfortunately, some clerics condemn this as idolatry, but studying biblical idolatry reveals that it means worshipping physical objects or fake gods unrelated to the true God, accompanied by unholy practices. Channeling point-of-contact faith toward the true God is simply releasing expectation. To apply this passage to our lives today, we must examine our faith. Faith exists in different dimensions—the faith of the Centurion who believed only a word was necessary was described by Jesus as great faith, but if you find that level difficult to attain, hold fast to the expectant faith of the woman with the issue of blood.
