In Mark 9:40, Jesus reveals a foundational truth regarding kingdom work: whoever is not against Him is on His side. To fully grasp this verse, we must look at the surrounding context starting in verse 38. John reported to Jesus that they saw someone casting out demons in His name and tried to stop him because he was not following their specific group. In verse 39, Jesus explicitly urged John to leave the man alone. He explained that no one who performs a miracle in His name can easily speak evil of Him soon afterward. Jesus concluded in verse 40 that as long as someone is not actively opposing Him, they are advancing His cause. This passage serves as a direct rebuke to modern denominationalism. Jesus foresaw that Christianity would expand into various traditions, local assemblies, and groups. He wanted His followers to realize that every ministry operating under His name and truth is part of the same kingdom family. Apostle Paul confronted this exact problem in the early church in 1 Corinthians 1:10-13. The believers in Corinth had divided themselves into rival factions, claiming loyalty to Paul, Apollos, Cephas, or Christ. Paul forcefully asked them, “Is Christ divided?”, reminding them that no preacher was crucified for them nor were they baptized into human names. Regrettably, modern Christianity has allowed sectarian divisions to spiral out of control. Many churches focus heavily on spotting faults in other ministries, criticizing minor doctrinal differences, and poaching members from neighboring assemblies. Too much of today’s evangelism has devolved into church against church rather than the body of Christ uniting against sin and darkness. Believers often reject ministers from outside their denomination or refuse to collaborate with Christians who worship in a different style. We must recognize that as long as we serve the same resurrected Lord, we are laboring for the same eternal kingdom. Here are practical steps to reject denominational pride and cultivate genuine unity:- Celebrate Kingdom Victories Everywhere: Rejoice when souls are saved and lives are transformed in other gospel-preaching churches.
- Refuse Toxic Church Competition: Stop criticizing other denominations over non-essential traditions and focus on winning lost souls.
- Welcome Fellow Believers Warmly: Treat every true disciple of Christ as a brother or sister regardless of their church label.
- Promote Inter-Church Fellowship: Support collaborative community outreach, joint prayer gatherings, and united kingdom service.
