Daily Reflection: Freely Given Power vs. Expensive Spiritual Delusions

The laws and spiritual tools God provides to Christians are given freely, yet we so often take them for granted. In stark contrast, those who dabble in the occult spend vast fortunes on rituals, charms, and magical books, which leads them to treat their practices with intense devotion. In today’s reflection, we discover how easily believers neglect the free, victorious power handed to us by God. In Acts 19:19, former practitioners of magic gathered their books and burned them publicly, destroying materials valued at fifty thousand pieces of silver. When you study the broader context, you discover why they willingly threw away such an immense fortune: They witnessed the Apostle Paul cast out demons through the genuine power of Jesus’ name. At the same time, they saw the seven sons of Sceva attempt to use Jesus’ name like a magical spell, only to be violently overpowered and stripped naked by a demonic spirit. These sorcerers suddenly realized that their expensive books and rituals were completely useless, powerless, and a total waste of money. Yet, as our supporting passage in Mark 16:17–18 reveals, true believers do not need expensive rituals to walk in authority: “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues… they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Unfortunately, many Christians today still run to self-proclaimed prophets and seers who charge heavy fees for consultations, items, and rituals labeled as “spiritual assignments.” Instead of building deep faith in Jesus Christ, people pay money for the very types of deceptive rituals and books that the Ephesians burned to the ground. Jesus clearly commanded His disciples in Matthew 10:8: “Freely you have received, freely give.” If anyone demands payment or sells commercialized “assignments” to deliver God’s power to you, that should immediately raise a red flag of spiritual manipulation. To apply this passage today, put your complete trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ. All you need to operate in Kingdom power and authority is genuine faith in the Lord Jesus Christ—it is freely given to every true believer.
