Every believer desires God’s approval. It is one thing to be accepted by men, applauded by church members, praised by mentors, or endorsed by denominations, but it is another thing entirely to be approved by God.
In 2 Timothy 2:15, the apostle Paul revealed the divine pattern by which a believer can stand before God without fear, without shame, and without error.
The verse is simple, yet the spiritual depth it carries is often missed because readers interpret it academically rather than spiritually.
But when we read it through the lens of divine tutorship, the same lens Paul used when speaking to Timothy, the entire revelation becomes clear.
The verse says:
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

This single verse contains three divine requirements that every servant of God must fulfill to be approved:

Study means allowing the Holy Spirit to interpret scripture

You cannot understand the Bible through grammar. You cannot decode prophecy through dictionaries. You cannot grasp spiritual mysteries through Hebrew and Greek lexicons. Why?
Because the Bible is not a human text, therefore it cannot be understood by human intelligence.
Study requires spiritual illumination
The Holy Spirit is the true teacher of scripture.
1 John 2:27 says the anointing teaches all things.
John 14:26 says the Holy Ghost teaches and brings truth to remembrance.
Isaiah 54:13 says God Himself teaches His children.
Therefore, to “study” is to sit under the Holy Spirit until He opens scripture by revelation.
Study separates you from false teachers
When you study through human mentorship:
You receive private interpretation (2 Peter 1:20–21).
You inherit twisted scriptures (2 Peter 3:15–16).
You become partial in doctrine (Malachi 2:7–9).
But when you study in the Spirit:
You are taught truth directly.
You avoid doctrinal pollution.
You grow in spiritual accuracy.
This is why study is the first requirement for divine approval.
2. Be a workman that has no shame
After studying, Paul uses another word that carries deep spiritual meaning:
“A workman that needeth not to be ashamed…”
This goes far beyond morality or reputation, it is a spiritual state.
A workman without shame is one who practices what the Holy Spirit teaches
God does not approve hearers. He approves doers.
James 1:22 says:
“Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…”
The moment the Holy Spirit teaches a believer something from scripture, God expects that believer to practice it. This is where many Christians fall.
They learn revelation but never live revelation.
They receive insight but never apply insight.
They get divine instruction but walk in human will.
A workman without shame is a believer who:
- Lives by the revelation received
- Practices the word consistently
- Obeys truth even when it is difficult
- Walks in spiritual obedience
- Avoids hypocrisy and double standards
Shame comes when a believer cannot defend what they believe
A believer who only carries head knowledge cannot stand confidently before God. Why? Because God sees the heart, not the memory.
Shame appears when:
- a preacher teaches what he cannot practice
- a believer quotes what he does not understand
- someone shares revelation they borrowed from others
- a Christian tries to explain doctrines they learned from men
- a person ministers without spiritual authority
A workman without shame is one who:
- has been taught by God
- practices what God revealed
- lives out scripture through the Spirit
- stands confidently in divine truth
This is why practice (obedience) is the second requirement for divine approval.
3. Rightly divide the word of truth
The final requirement is teaching, but teaching done correctly.
Rightly dividing means: teaching others the same revelation God taught you
Not what a pastor said.
Not denominational doctrines.
Not the trending interpretation.
Not commentary or concordance teaching.
Rightly dividing is:
Opening scripture in the same spirit that revealed it
Interpreting scripture without human influence
Teaching truth without private interpretation
Explaining the word by revelation, not intellect
Expounding doctrine in alignment with the Spirit’s voice
Why many preachers cannot rightly divide the word
Because they:
- study human materials
- follow human tutors
- learn under denominational structures
- interpret scripture with intellectual tools
- borrow revelations from other preachers
This automatically disqualifies them from divine approval because:
You cannot correctly divide a word that God did not teach you.
To rightly divide, you must:
First study in the Spirit
Then practice what the Spirit taught
Then teach others from your divine experience
This is why teaching is the third requirement for God’s approval.
The complete pathway to divine approval
Here is the full chain:
1. Study — Receive divine teaching directly from God’s Spirit.
2. Workman — Practice the revelation until it becomes your lifestyle.
3. Rightly divide — Teach others from what the Spirit Himself revealed to you.
Any believer who follows these steps becomes approved by God.
Not approved by men.
Not approved by denominations.
Not approved by mentors.
But approved by heaven.
