Many people begin their walk with God full of faith, expectation, and confidence. They believe easily at the beginning. They pray boldly. They dream freely. But somewhere along the journey, trust begins to weaken. Doubt slowly replaces confidence, not because God has failed, but because waiting has stretched longer than expected.
This message is not written to condemn anyone. It is written to reveal the single greatest reason people struggle to trust God, and to restore confidence in His faithfulness.
What Stops People From Trusting God?
The primary thing that stops people from trusting God is God’s delay.
It is not sin first.
It is not lack of prayer first.
It is not even unbelief first.
Most times, people stop trusting God because what He promised has not happened when they expected it to happen.
Why God’s Delay Shakes Human Trust
Human beings are time-bound creatures. We live by calendars, clocks, seasons, and deadlines. We measure progress by how fast something happens. Because of this, we unconsciously expect God to operate within our sense of timing.
When answers delay, the human heart begins to question:
- Did God really hear me?
- Did I misunderstand Him?
- Is He still willing?
- Did I do something wrong?
Over time, these questions mature into doubt, and doubt gradually erodes trust.
The Root Of The Problem: Not Understanding God’s Nature
The real issue is not that God delays. The issue is that humans often forget that God does not think, plan, or operate the way humans do.
Scripture addresses this clearly.
Isaiah 55:8–9 (KJV)
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
This passage explains why trusting God can be difficult. God’s thoughts are not simply different; they are higher. His ways are not slightly better; they are far above human logic.
What humans call delay, God often calls preparation.
What humans call silence, God often calls process.
God’s Timing Is Not Random
God does nothing casually. Every promise He gives is attached to a timing only He understands. Delay does not mean denial. Delay means alignment.
God waits until:
- The person is ready
- The environment is prepared
- The outcome will glorify Him fully
- The blessing will not destroy the receiver
When these conditions are not met, God withholds fulfillment, not out of cruelty, but out of wisdom.
Abraham And Sarah: Trust Tested By Time
One of the strongest biblical examples of delayed promise is found in the lives of Abraham and Sarah.
God promised Abraham a son, not as a suggestion, but as a covenant. Yet years passed. Sarah remained barren. Abraham grew older. Hope became harder to sustain.
At some point, logic began to speak louder than faith. Biology contradicted prophecy. Time seemed to mock the promise.
Yet Scripture records that God did not forget.
Genesis 21:1–2 (KJV)
“And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.
For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.”
Notice the phrase: “at the set time.”
The promise was not late. It was scheduled.
Why God Waited Until Old Age
God allowed Abraham and Sarah to reach an age where human strength could no longer take credit. When Isaac finally came, there was no doubt that it was the hand of God.
If the child had come early, effort could be credited.
If the child had come late, glory belonged only to God.
This is how God preserves His glory and strengthens true trust.
How Delay Exposes The Object Of Trust
Delay reveals what we truly trust.
If trust is in timing, delay will break us.
If trust is in God, delay will refine us.
Many people trust outcomes, not God. They trust results, not relationship. When results delay, trust collapses because it was never rooted in God Himself.
God’s Promises Always Have An Appointed Time
Scripture repeatedly teaches that God’s vision does not expire. It waits.
Habakkuk 2:3 (KJV)
“For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”
What looks like delay is often divine timing waiting for fulfillment conditions.
A Call To Hold On And Trust God
If you are reading this and struggling to trust God because of waiting, you are not weak. You are human. But you must remember that the God you serve is not bound by your calendar.
Hold on to Him. Not because waiting is easy, but because He is faithful.
Just as He fulfilled His promise to Abraham and Sarah at the appointed time, He will fulfill every word He has spoken concerning you.
Trust Him even when it seems delayed. God never forgets His promises. He only waits for the right time.
