Bible verse of the day for Sunday August 2 2026
The bible verse of the day for today Sunday August 2 2026 is Jeremiah 20:11. Let us look at how this scripture reads across 7 translations, broken down section by section: 1. King James Version (KJV) “But the Lord is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.” 2. New International Version (NIV) “But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; their dishonor will never be forgotten.” 3. English Standard Version (ESV) “But the Lord is with me as a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble; they will not overcome me. They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten.” 4. New King James Version (NKJV) “But the Lord is with me as a mighty, awesome One. Therefore my persecutors will stumble, and will not prevail. They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not prosper. Their everlasting confusion will never be forgotten.” 5. New Living Translation (NLT) “But the Lord stands beside me like a great warrior. Before him my persecutors will stumble. They cannot defeat me. They will fail and be thoroughly humiliated. Their dishonor will never be forgotten.” 6. Amplified Bible (AMP) “But the Lord is with me as a dread Champion [one to be feared, who strikes terror in my enemies]; Therefore my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will be utterly ashamed, for they have not succeeded; Their everlasting dishonor and disgrace will never be forgotten.” 7. Christian Standard Bible (CSB) “But the Lord is with me like a formidable warrior; therefore, my persecutors will stumble and will not prevail. They will be thoroughly disgraced because they will not succeed, with their eternal, unforgettable dishonor.”Daily Reflection: Standing Firm in Persecution with God as a Mighty Terrible One
First and foremost, Jeremiah, who is the writer of this passage, is known as the “weeping prophet” because he suffered both physically and emotionally, as his life was at times defined by grief, rejection, and intense persecution. When you read today’s bible verse in its context, i.e., from verse 1, you discover how Jeremiah was persecuted by Pashhur, the chief governor in the house of the Lord. Pashhur ordered Jeremiah to be beaten and placed in chains. Because of persecuting the prophet, God prophesied that He will cause the whole Judah to be taken into exile by the Babylonians, where Pashhur and his whole household will be taken into captivity, and his friends who were fond of prophesying lies to the people shall be killed. So after all these prophecies, Jeremiah was bold enough to declare God as the mighty terrible one that will destroy his enemies. Supporting scripture in Matthew 23:37–39 reveals how our Lord Jesus revealed that Jerusalem killed and persecuted God’s prophets, even after they suffered greatly in Babylonian captivity and returned from such. Jesus predicted their final destruction and dispersion, which happened in AD 70 by the Roman army led by General Titus, roughly 40 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Now, I know most of us Christians always hold on to the idea that because we are serving God, we should not suffer persecutions. But looking back on how Jeremiah, who was a mouthpiece of God, suffered so much persecution but still looked upon God as the mighty terrible one beside him, we discover that if we hold on to the same idea, God is also going to destroy our enemies. Jesus Himself said in several instances that those who follow Him will be greatly persecuted, but that they should rejoice when that happens, because if we are able to stand firm to the end, we will be saved (Matthew 10:22). Also in John 16:33, He specifically stated that we should rejoice because He has overcome. To apply this passage to our lives, we must ensure we do not get alarmed when we suffer persecutions. Instead, we should discover as Jeremiah did that we have a mighty terrible one who is always there to defend us and destroy our enemies. Today’s Confession: I boldly declare that the Lord is with me as a mighty terrible one! I refuse to be alarmed, shaken, or intimidated by any form of persecution, opposition, or trial in my life. I stand firm to the end, resting in the absolute victory that Christ has already won for me all through this Sunday, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen! A Morning Prayer for Divine Defense and Unshakable Boldness: Heavenly Father, the Almighty God who stands as a mighty terrible warrior beside Your servants, I bow before Your presence this Sunday morning. Thank You for Your Word in Jeremiah 20:11 that assures me of Your overwhelming defense and presence in times of trouble. Lord, forgive me for any moments I have been afraid or alarmed by the opposition and persecutions of life. Fill my spirit with boldness, knowing that You are fighting my battles and that no weapon formed against me shall prosper. Cause every adversary rising against Your purpose in my life to stumble and fall. Grant me the grace to endure faithfully to the end and rejoice in Your victory.
